Artist Statement
Renée Kaats explores themes of identity, beauty, and their expression within the context of contemporary culture. Her personal work often takes the form of self-portraits, serving as an artistic response to the selfie culture and the broader search for self-identity. Themes such as emotion, transience, and the imperfect, darker aspects of humanity are also deeply embedded in her work.
Renée has a strong affinity for contrasts, both thematically and within her painting technique. She consciously chooses a realistic and classical approach to painting—not only out of a profound love for traditional art but also to bridge the gap between classical techniques and contemporary issues. This connection infuses her work with a sense of modern relevance.
While her art often reflects a specific perspective, Renée strives to maintain nuance, inviting viewers to engage with the work and form their own interpretations. Through this dynamic interplay between artist and audience, her pieces become more than visual representations—they spark dialogue and reflection.
